Macerating the strawberries is totally optional and something I only do when strawberries aren’t in season. When my strawberries are red throughout, I prefer to enjoy their natural flavor at peak ripeness without anything added.
If you’re not dairy free, you can use dairy ingredients in place of all the non-dairy ones (butter, buttermilk, etc.).
To make the almond buttermilk, simply add 1/2 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a 1/2 cup measuring cup; and let sit for five minutes. You can also do this with cow dairy if you don’t have any buttermilk on hand.
