Ottolenghi’s Berbere Braised Chicken w/ Chickpeas & Carrots

I am a selective fan of Ottolenghi’s work in regards to feeding my family. I’ve found some great recipes to make as sides as part of a meal, but I don’t know I’d consider many of them “family-friendly”. This is my kids’ fault, not his. His newest book, Ottolenghi Test Kitchen: Shelf Love, does have more options to fall in the weeknight category. Food under his umbrella is often well spiced and acidic, and I love that, but my kids are not always fans.
Berbere is a spicy, Ethiopian blend. It can be tricky to find. I’ve made this dish twice now, and the second time used a dry harissa blend with some extra coriander, and I really loved that route. This makes a lot! If you aren’t leftover people, use just one can of chickpeas and 4 large thighs instead and you’ll still have plenty of food.
